Playing with Black & White's (cont'd)

Here is a picture I took during the Labor Day weekend, Downtown Chicago. I recently thought of doing a B&W of it. Wish I had the Golden Gate bridge here, that would have looked wayyy cooler with a night shot; but Chicago is great too! So here it goes...

Sunset: Downtown Chicago

The following one is the one taken n November at the famous Devon Street. It's like the Little India, and most people who love ethnic Indian food/grocery in the Midwest know about this street. I liked the glare that the two lamp-posts gave. For some reason, it reminded me of Time Square...

The good old days...

So I have decided to play with a few black & whites. Some people are all for B&W, some are not so. I belong to the former. I think that anytime there is love, innocence, tender moments or any such time where you want to capture "time" and not just a face, B&W is a stronger alternative. It's hard to explain, but then I don't need to explain myself ;)

I have to be honest, I did *not* take this picture! Before you start shouting, let me say that my lovely wife took this one and I was pleasantly surprised. So I decided to convert this one to a B&W one. This picture made me think of the "Good old days". I can totally see myself as one of these kids, laughing, carefree, innocent...

(Well maybe not that innocent, but you get the idea!)

Again, in the B&W state of mind, and so sticking with that idea.

Picture Pose

So we go to a restaurant, and my daughter asks me why I am not taking her picture even when I got a camera along with me. After a few umms and wells, I thought she was right. After all, I did bring my camera with me to the restaurant...

By the time I had my camera out and turned on, she was already posing for me. As soon as the flash went off, she just went about with her business! I remember my wife asking me not to have an "open mouth look" on me...

Dressing Up

Every day my daughter *needs* to dress up! As soon as she is back from her school, she needs to change her clothes and dress up as some princess or whatever fictional character mode she is in that day. Try stopping her and you will all those tantrums that makes those early years so special...

Labor Day @ Downtown Chicago

Sometimes you just have to take a pause and see what nature has to offer. I was at Navy Pier in Chicago over the Labor Day 08 weekend, and I just couldn't help but admire the sunset and the wonderful skyline of Chicago during the sunset. While I am by no means a great photographer, I thought I would try my hands on capturing this moment. While unoriginal, this definitely is a very good "natural" picture IMHO.

PS: Please check out the B&W version of the same picture in my December blog. See if you like one better than the other.

The following is a picture taken from the Expressway while heading to the Navy Pier.

Sleepy Heads

sleepy heads

The cousins woke up and I just put them on the couch, and asked them to give me their best smile.

This is what they came up with!!! :)

Looking for a monster

I loved the tender moment captured here with the lens. The cousins are looking out of the window at night, trying to find a monster!

Swinging in the sunshine

Swinging in the sunshine

I thought of going against the conventional. Instead of applying the DOF (Depth of Field) such that the subject is clear but the background blurred, I decided to blur the subject in the background.

I have hoped to capture the "time" rather than the "activity". Personally, looking at this picture makes me feel like time is standing still; but for you it might be a really bad blurry picture!!!

I would be very much interested in knowing what you feel...

My foray into the tripod world

So this is my first ever experience with a tripod. I have been keeping an eye on the moon for a few days now, and I shot this with a really low aperture.

My thoughts were that since it's a really cloudy night, I would need to keep the aperture really low. However, keeping the aperture to 2.5 sec also meant that the moon moved a bit! I guess I will have to keep playing...

July 4th

So this time I was trying my hands at the July 4th fireworks. I read a few forums online that told me about what I had to be aware of; but when it came time to shooting pictures, everything went out of the window!

I usually like to take a picture of fireworks that has a "clean" explosion of fireworks. Take the picture above, for example. I waited till I thought the surrounding fireworks had fizzled out, and the only thing that remained was the "globe" of fire.

The same thing with the picture above. I wanted to just take the "Star", not the other fireworks with it. I feel when I look at fireworks picture that sometimes it destroys the image.

Take a look at the picture below. Now some may think it's okay, some like me may not like it...

Feet

I had an assignment to take a picture of the feet, and since every one with a mother was taking the same kind of pictures, I thought I would make it a B&W one and color up only the feet. This effect makes the "feet" stand out in the picture...

Another interpretation of "feet". You can compare the above picture with say when you are on the beach. I deliberately kept the snow B&W and the patch of yard in color, as if to say the spring is around the corner; fret not, the future looks bright...

Like not LOVE!

So we thought that Ashna would love soccer! Little did we know it is going to be this painful!!!

Don't get me wrong, Ashna likes to play soccer, like any other 3.5 yr old girl does. But she doesn't LOVE it. On top of it, she is taught to "share" toys with other kids; and soccer totally defies that mantra! She makes this face (you know, the one where everyone goes "Awww") when the soccer ball is taken from her. It's like she is saying, "What just happened? Why did someone snatch the ball from me??"

When it's practice time, she loves it. When the coach asks to warm up before the "real" thing, she is there. She loves to do all those excercises and she has fun with it. I mean, take a look at these...

In fact, when it's time to have a race from this end to that, my lil' Ashna usually is the first or the second (you bet I am a proud dad!)

It's when the actual time of playing comes when the pain begins (oh! for me, that is...). She looks at everyone around as if saying, "You all need to share, and take turns!!!"

In fact, in between, she is nice enough to take time out and see her friend Maddy's little brother!

She loves him, and every time she sees him at Goddard, she invariably stops by and plays with him. I guess she is giving her parents (for those who joined late, that's us!) a hint?

Anyways, so where were we??

Oh! Yeah. Soccer...

So there, that's our problem; a hyper-active kid who likes soccer, but doesn't LOVE it (I am not so soccer crazy myself), and who just can't seem to understand why other kids are "snatching" the ball away from others rather than taking turns and playing together...

The two angels

So I had the friday off, and I thought, "At last, some time to myself. It will be as if I am having a long weekend, and I can finally open a 6 pack and enjoy the beautiful day."

I think I must have thought out loud, 'coz my wife heard it! She asks why have our little one needs to go to the school when the good-for-nothing fella (that's me, by the way) is sitting at home doing nothing? I didn't have a proper answer (I did say Umm, hmm, and some other syllables...). So she decides to have Ashna skip the school. As fate would have it, our good friend had some minor problems and so couldn't keep their daughter in school. So come along, I told my friend (actually my wife asked them to drop her with me rather than worry too much about it). So I had 2 angels for the whole day and all I had to do was to keep them happy. So easy...

I decided to shoot a couple of pictures of them. Here they are, giggling and snuggling together when they should be taking their naps. I am standing at the stairs leading upstairs and give them a yell, they look at me, and snap! I take their picture :)

Of course, now that they see a camera in my hand, they are both up! I told them that they should be napping; and that they need to act their age, all 3.5 years! But somehow, they didn't listen.
Ah well, I took another picture.

One thing is certain! The two angels became two little devils by the time it was "my" nap time. They did NOT let me sleep when I wanted to.

Oh! Did I mention, they did go to sleep later on, both of them, once they were certain that I wasn't going to take my nap...
